Sam Smith knows loves themself for who they are, and they promise that it will show in their upcoming album.

In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Smith shared that finding "queer joy" has been a work in progress since they adopted they/them pronouns in 2019. But they are on to something.

"We're all masters of pain, and I think it's actually a very courageous act to step into the queer joy of it all," said Smith. Embracing who they are has helped their music, mental health and has given their fashion sense a makeover.

"It was really a coming-of-age moment for me," Smith said. "I was turning 30, we went through COVID-19, and I got the opportunity to sit down and really ask myself what it is I want to do, the type of music I want to make, and also ask myself how involved I want to be [in it]."

About the chaotic, but successful, years of their 20s, "they were my drama years, I really went through it," Smith told Billboard. "I didn't have a lot of boundaries in place, not just in relationships necessarily, but in life in general."

They added, "Though, you're not meant to, right? You're meant to learn what your boundaries are."

We can't wait to hear how Smith will put it all in their songs. Head over to Billboard to read the full interview.
